
INTRODUCTION
The Regional Institute of Planning, Applied Economics and Statistics (erstwhile Statistical Training Institute) was set up by Government of Orissa in 1970-71 with a view to imparting in-service training to the Statistical personnel of various cadre working in different Departments of Government, Semi Government, Public Sector Undertakings including other States of the region. The main objective of the training programme is to develop the expertise of Statistical personnel for scientific methods of collection, compilation, interpretation and analysis of data in order to bring about a systematic, uniform and efficient management system in the offices.

Training constitute the core activities of the Regional Institute of Planning, Applied
Economics and Statistics. In addition to this it is engaged in organising conferences,
seminars and workshop. The Institute conducts training programmes sponsored by Department
of Personnel and Training, Government of India for the benefit of Senior &
Middle level officers.
Two
regular and full time training courses are conducted in the Institute. The first one is
Higher Statistical Training Course meant for middle and supervisory level Statistical
personnel. The duration of the course is for a period of 16 weeks but revised to
tenweeks now. The other is Basic
Statistical Training Course, meant for primary level Statistical personnel. The duration
of the course was 10 weeks but revised ti six weeks during this year. Both the training courses are conducted twice each in a
financial year.
In addition to above the Institute conducts training programmes sponsored by different departments of Government of India and State Govt. as and when required. Respective departments design the course contents and the cost of the training programme is also borne by them.
Training
is the main activity of the Institute supported by substantial study materials made
available from eminent resource personnel. The contents of the Training Programme are
oriented towards problems and remedial measures of various aspects of Plan Formulation,
Administration, Use of various modern statistical methods and its application.
2. INFRASTRUCTURE
FACILITIES IN THE INSTITUTE
(a)Library:
There is a reference library with more than 2000 books on Statistics, Mathematics,
Economics, Computer science and Environment etc. in the Institute.
(b)Hostel:
The Institute is having its own Hostel to accommodate 25 trainees at a time. The
Hostel caters to the needs of the trainees coming for different types of training
programmes.
(c)Conference Hall:
There is a well-furnished A/C conference hall with Laptop Computer and LCD projector in
the Institute to cater to the needs of the training programmes. The conference hall is
also used for seminars, workshop and meetings.
(d)Transport:
The Institute has a Bus with a capacity of 40 and a car of its own to meet the
requirement for the field visit of the training programmes.
(e)Computer
Lab: The
institute has two computer labs with teaching aids for the benefit of the trainees.

4. LOCATION AND
CLIMATE
The
Institute is situated in the temple city of Bhubaneswar, Orissa. It is near to the Kalyan
Mandap and D.A.V. School in Unit-VIII. The Institute is wel-connected by Rail, Road and
Airways. The Institute is 5 K.M. from Air Port, 2 K.M. from Railway Station and 3 K.M. from New Bus Stand. The Climate is hot and humid
in summer and moderate in winter.

6. TEACHING
FACULTY
A
Principal, in the rank of Joint Director, heads the Institute. A Deputy Director, two
Assistant Directors and one Research Assistant assist him. All the regular courses,
sponsored courses, DOPT courses and capsule courses are taken care of by teaching faculty
of the Training Institute as well as guest faculty from different Universities, Central
Government and State Government. Retired and eminent persons such as professors,
Administrators and Technocrats are invited regularly for imparting training of various
types.
