he Directorate of Economics and Statistics of Odisha was originally created as a small cell under Planning and Reconstruction Department in 1950 and continued to function till 1956. Thereafter the Cell was transferred to the control of Finance Department. The Cell was declared as a separate Directorate in the name of Bureau of Statistics and Economics on 01.05.1958. Realising the functional association with planning machinery the State Government back this Directorate to the administrative control of Planning and Co-ordination Department in 1961. In 1987 the Organisation was renamed as Directorate of Economics and Statistics.

The Directorate has been declared as Nodal Agency by the Government vide letter no. 4004 dated 20.03.2009. For co-ordinating statistical activities in the State. The Director, Economics and Statistics has been declared as the Nodal Officer by the Government for developing an efficient statistical system in the State vide letter no. 10548 dated 26.08.2011.

Funtion

The Directorate of Economics and Statistics being the Nodal Statistical Organisation in the State is responsible for collection, compilation, analysis and publication of data on diverse socio-economic activities of the State. While the DE&S collects data directly through its own functionaries, substantial statistical information is mobilised with the help of other line depatments. The function of DE&S can broadly be classified as follows

• Collection, compilation, processing , analysis and dissemination of various types of statistical data relating to socio-economic and agricultural activities in the State.
• Improvement of quality , scope and usefulness of the statistical and economic data available in the State.
• Collection of data through well designed sample survey on socio-economic matters and formulating estimates of agricultural production , yield rate and land utilisation under various crops by large scale sample surveys.
• Research and analytical studies relating to economic, social and financial matters in the State and making an rational evaluation of progress achieved in the Sectors.
• Statistical and economic advice to different departments of Government and to the Heads of Departments.
• Liaison between Statistical Organisation of other States and the Centre in statistical matters pertaining to the State of Odisha.
• Dissemination of statistical data through periodical reports publications and correspondences. Collection of official statistics as by products of administration.
• Training of statistical personnel of different organisation of the State.
• Any other adhoc works assigned by Government from time to time.
